Listening for God’s call
The call to ministry doesn’t often come with fire from heaven—it comes as a whisper. Elijah, fresh from his victory on Mt. Carmel, fled in despair until God met him not in wind, fire, or earthquake, but in a “still small voice” (1 Kings 19). That quiet word restored his courage and renewed his mission.
Ministry today is much the same. God’s call comes not through spectacle, but through Scripture, prayer, mentors, and trials. Luther described it as oratio, meditatio, tentatio—prayer, meditation, and struggle.
